There are two kinds of brainstorming, knowledgeable and intuitive. As the name implies, knowledgeable brainstorming refers to discussing/exploring an idea with one or more people who have knowledge on the subject and who usually are available to you within your company. Intuitive brainstorming is a very different kettle of fish.
Intuitive brainstorming is a function of how one's mind works, rather than the knowledge it possesses. It's found in the people who can successfully play Devil's Advocate, or ask intelligent out-of-the-box questions about subjects of which they know little to nothing.
Intuitive brainstorming can help you
- spot problems or holes in new products or services;
- break out of a rut on a subject you know too well;
- identify a completely new approach to a task or challenge; and
- find new insights on people and/or situations.
